Ten Necessities for Your Vacation

Are you ready for a great vacation in a sunny, warm, and possibly sandy area? Ingredients for a hot holiday youll remember for a lifetime are easy to plan. Here are a few to keep in mind:

First, make sure your rooms at the resort are booked in advance. Many of the best vacation resorts are fully booked ahead of time, and having reservations will make sure you have a roof over your head. In fact, some of the best destinations are booked months in advance, so do your planning early. Also remember that you may get better rates on your hotel by paying in advance.

Second, make sure your money is safe. Rather than carrying cash, use travelers checks. If travelers checks are lost or stolen they can be quickly replaced. Or, better yet, use a credit card. Most resorts take the major bank cards. Youll have a record of your purchases and the ability to dispute any inaccurate claims. If your card is lost or stolen, it can also be quickly replaced and you wont be responsible for fraudulent purchases made with it. Nothing could ruin a great vacation faster than having your cash lost or stolen with no way to replace it, so dont take that chance. Use credit cards or travelers checks and be safe.

Third, make sure the kids are taken care of. If your children are traveling with you, make sure the resort has adequate play areas and hopefully a daycare service so that youll really have a vacation without chasing the kids through the sand all the time. Many resorts have activity directors for the childrens events, and the kids will have a great time.

Next, what is the nightlife like? If you and your significant other want to dance the night away, fantastic! Just make sure that the location you pick has a reputation for quality nightlife. Warm vacation spots that pride themselves on good nightclubs include Key West a favorite of Ernest Hemmingway; Miami the home of Gloria Estefan; Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Diego, and if you dont mind skipping the beach, Las Vegas has some of the most exciting night life on earth. And remember to take along some cab fare. Definitely dont drive when youve been drinking.

Next think comedy. Are there good comedy clubs in the area? Nothing beats a good stand up comedian. And if stand up isnt your bag, what other entertainment do you prefer. Magicians and musicians are always popular.

Water sports and excitement go together, and most warm, sunny vacation spots include plenty of both. How about parasailing or hang gliding? What about Scuba diving, snorkeling, or swimming with the dolphins. If you like the water but dont want to get wet yourself, check out the deep sea fishing if you are ocean side. If in Florida, remember all the inland lakes and the trophy bass they hold.

Number seven in our list of necessities is a practical matter. Make sure that either you speak the language of the natives, or they speak English. That makes Jamaica a great hot spot, as well as Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Also Bermuda, Tahiti and the Dominican Republic are waiting to provide you with a wonderful vacation in paradise.

Number eight is rather simple. Is transport in and out of your vacation paradise easy? Do they have a quality airport? Or will you be driving. Make sure the transportation needs are easily taken care of.

Next, number nine, sure to be a hit with the ladies, is shopping. Does your warm sunny vacation destination have adequate shopping facilities? Nothing makes a woman happier than a chance to shop.

Finally, the top necessity for your warm and sunny destination is that it be a place youve always wanted to visit. Whether youve always desired a Florida beach, a California surfing wave, or a tropical island, make sure that your destination is one youve always wanted to visit. And number eleven, as a bonus, is to bring along the video camcorder and still photo camera so that you can record the memories of your vacation and enjoy them for years to come.

Ever dreamed of going on a Caribbean Cruise but dont know what to expect when you get there? Well, to start off, you have to know what the Caribbean is. Its a region of the Americas thats located in between North America and South America.

When you think about the word Caribbean, youre probably thinking about beaches. But theres more to the Caribbean than just beaches. There are a number of things that you can do. You can go beachcombing, have a picnic and sail in San Juan, Puerto Rico, or go on powerboat adventures in Nassau, Bahamas. You will never run out of options as to what to do next. You have the entire place, the sun and the sea.

The top destinations in the Caribbean are Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Aruba, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Cayman Islands, and the US Virgin Islands.

Now what can you do at those top spots? In Montego Bay, Jamaica, you can go on a Catamaran Cruise for approximately 3 hours for as low as US$60 with Viator. You can also go see the Luminous Lagoon for 6 hours in Trelawny, Jamaica for US$37 per person. If you want to go sightseeing in the Dominican Republic, you can go and check out the Ocean World Adventure Park in Puerto Plata. Have you ever wondered how the Caribbean waters look underwater? Well, you can stop wondering and go on the Seaquarium Adventure in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

If youre the type who would rather go shopping than go on adventures, dont worry, you can still shop in the Caribbean. In St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, driver-guides will show you Magens Bay, St. John and the chain of British Virgin Islands from Mt. Top, the highest point on St. Thomas. After touring the mountains, you will be taken to downtown Charlotte Amalie, where you can be by yourself for lunch or browse the duty-free shops of the Old Danish town.

Cruising the Caribbean

White sand beaches, seagulls floating freely, cold colored drinks with cute umbrella. Thats something that you really want. The perfect way to slow down is to go on a relaxing and enjoyable cruise to the Caribbean.

You can chose from many travel packages when you decide to spend your vacation cruising the Caribbean, whether it be a 7-night Southern Caribbean Cruise, or a 4-night Western Caribbean cruise, you are guaranteed to experience the time of your life in this paradise earth.

While planning your trip make sure that you dont miss the following option that your cruise package will offer you. The Adventure of the Seas Cruise ship features an ice-skating rink, a rock-climbing wall, in-line skating, a 9-hole miniature golf course, a day spa and fitness center and even a full-size basketball court. But thats just for starters.

The Royal Caribbean International has a number of cruises that you can avail of. Lets take their 7-night Southern Caribbean Cruise on the Adventure of the Seas Cruise ship as an example of how a cruise should go.

On Day 1, you would be at the Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Before the ship leaves at 8:30 PM, you can check out the sights at one of the largest islands in the Eastern Caribbean. In Puerto Rico, you have to check out El Yunque Forest and be amazed with the exotic flora. You can also go see Bao Grande, a natural pool that is so inviting, you might be tempted to take a dip. There are a number of tourist spots that you can still go see, but maybe a day would not suffice going around Puerto Rico.

On Day 2, on the way to Oranjestad, Aruba, you can have fun on the cruise ship with Casino Royale, or pretty much anything you want to do with their onboard facilities.

On Day 3, the cruise ship docks at the Port of Oranjestad at about 8:00 AM. Here, you can be taking a submarine 150 feet below the sea. On the surface you can go shopping for bargains or go for land sporting adventures. Just set your alarm and remember that the ship leaves at around 8:30 PM.

On Day 4, the ship will dock at the Port of Willemstad, Curacao at 8:00 AM. If theres one thing that you would really hate to miss, it would be exploring the Hato Caves and their mystical underground lake. You can also go biking and enjoy a trolley-train tour, before the ship leaves at 5:00 PM.

There will be more cruising to do on Day 5, so enjoy your day-off from land.

On Day 6, you would probably be competing in a race in Philipsburg, St. Maarten and experience kayaking.

On Day 7, you will find yourself sprawled out on the beach of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. You will have the whole day roaming around the beautiful island before getting back on the ship by 5:30 PM.

By 7:00 AM the next morning, you will be back at the Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico with a memory stick full of pictures and videos from your cruise.

Cruising the Caribbean is the perfect vacation for you, not only because it is affordable, but the whole cruise package is convincingly worth it.

How To Pack For Cruise Travel

2010
01.19

You know what you want to pack as far as your wardrobe for your cruise vacation, but here are the little essentials that you might not think about.

One very important thing to pack is a Wall Mount Power Outlet with 3 Outlets. Electrical Outlets in the cruise cabins are very stingy and if you want to dry your hair while your curlers are heating up you will have a problem.

When I pack, I put all of my clothes in Dry Cleaners plastic bags. These will keep your clothes from wrinkling. Pack anything that can spill in zip lock bags. An international power converter and a currency converter will be needed for European Cruises. Some people pack a night light for the bathroom. I have found if you leave the bathroom light on and close the door it is sufficient to guide you there in the middle of the night.

We pack a portable CD player with 20 CDs and an alarm clock. We pack two way radios so we can communicate when we are in different parts of the ship. I like to sleep in when we go to the Caribbean and John likes to get up and have breakfast. He quietly lets himself out of the cabin, and when I get up I call him to let him know its safe to come back to the room.

In colder climates you will need a jacket and some long sleeve shirts. I always pack sturdy hiking boots if we go to Europe or Alaska. (Most of the time I wear them on the airplane with slacks since they take up so much room in the suitcase). They come in very handy when touring Europes sometimes centuries old cobblestone streets. When you go to Europe you will probably visit churches, and other religious buildings and proper attire must be worn-no sleeveless tops, no shorts and in some places a head covering. In Thailand it was necessary to remove our shoes before entering their holy places. You are in some elses country and must abide by their rules. No matter where you are headed remember that cabins are small and have little closets and drawers. This is an important fact to know when you are packing.

Bring all of your toiletries, film, in-cabin wine, lotions, medications and dental care products from home. They will be quite pricey on the ship. If you have an on going medical problem have your doctor write a brief medical history so you can supply it to the ships doctor if a problem should arise. You should also pack things like, Alka Seltzer, constipation relief, cough drops, aspirin and band aids. Make up a little first aid kit that suits your needs. Dont laugh, you will probably be trying new foods, eating more than usual, and you never know how you will react. Those items mentioned above are expensive on the ship.

A few things that are handy are clothes pins for weighing down the shower curtain (the showers are small and the curtain will stick to you when your wet. This really gives me the creeps). A highlighter is great for highlighting the activities on your daily cruise sheet. The night before highlight the events you want to participate in and all you have to do is glance at the sheet to know where you want to be and when. Tell your room steward on the first day to leave you two daily cruise sheets so each of you will have one. This way if one of you wants to go to the wine tasting and the other wants to join in the art auction you both know where and when. Then when its over, call each other on the two way radios and meet up for a drink or lunch or whatever. Another valuable little item is post it notes if you dont have the two way radios. Just write on the post it where you are going and at what time and then stick on the outside of the cabin door. Presto your traveling partner knows where you are and when to expect you back. This is great for parents traveling with children.

Cruise Tip: Pack business cards with your email address on them. You meet all kinds of interesting people that you will want to stay in touch with. Some of our best friends are people we met on cruises, friends we continue to cruise with. I like to pack computer generated address labels to make it easy to send postcards.

I read this tip in several cruise reviews. Send a postcard to yourself. I have postcards from all over the world with the local stamps that I have sent to our home during each of our exotic cruises. I have a stamp from the CCCP that was the USSR- years ago. Its fun and you will always get a chuckle when the post card catches up to you after you are home.

It is a smart thing to bring along your cell phone (which means the charger too). If you incur delays you can call your Travel Agent and have her call the cruise lines. You can make phone calls while youre leaving port on the ship, and in some islands. The islands I have found to be cell phone friendly are the Bahamas, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Grand Cayman. Its great for phoning for a cab to the airport, or getting in touch with friends when you disembark. On the islands that do provide service you wont have to wait in long lines (pay phones on the islands is where the crew keeps in touch with home). Its just a handy thing to do and would be invaluable in an emergency.

Please dont forget a good sunscreen if you are going to the Caribbean. If you are from the colder climes and have not seen the sun in awhile you will NEED it. Even in Alaska you have to wear a sunscreen.

Lastly, dont forget your camera. Put this in your carry on, do not pack it. I have a friend that went to Hawaii and video taped a wedding, packed the camera in her luggage and it was stolen on the way home. If it is digital camera take extra memory cards since you will be taking lots of pictures and the cards are more expensive once you leave home.

Follow this advice and you will have a very enjoyable and comfortable cruise.

Happy Cruising!
